May Newsletter 2019

It has been a very busy last month in St. Abban's AC. We had some great performances at all levels on the road and the start of the Track and Field outdoor season.  We hosted some very successful events, our 46th Student Games, our 24th Open Sports, our Finland Table Quiz and our anniversary mass last Saturday night for Mick Byrne. We also assisted the County Board in running the Secondary Schools T&F and the Laois Championships T&F. Thank you to all our committee members, parents and volunteers that helped out throughout all these events, especially our catering team who do loads of work behind the scenes providing refreshments at all these occasions.
 

Streets of Kilkenny
Well done to everyone who took part in the Streets of Kilkenny 5k. Great atmosphere around the course. Special mention to William Kelly who was 1st Junior in 16:11. His hard work and dedication is paying off. Stephen Lawlor 16:15, Barry Knowles 18:15,Margo Dowling 22:05, Niall Egan 26:09, Pauline Doyle 28:44, Carmel Hughes 32:57, Noeleen Condron 34:44 and Karen Kealy.
 
Fighting Cocks 5k + 10k
We had a good crowd out at the Fighting Cocks 5/10k . On a sweltering day we had plenty of fine performances. In the 5k we had Colette English 20:43, Anthony Brennan 24:16, Sharon Buggy 24:27, Deirdre Brennan 28:26, Reggie Condron 34:02, Jason Monaghan 38:46and Mary Whelan 38:51. In the 10k Francis Fleming 42:29, Michael McDonald 55;43, Adrienne Kelly 55:53 and Claire O’Neill. Well done to all who took part.
 
Irish Milers Club- Greystones
The first of the Irish Milers’ Club meets took place in Greystones on Saturday 4th May. Cheryl Nolan returned from a training camp in Portugal to compete in the women’s 3k. In a very unevenly paced race Cheryl ran 9.43, a very solid effort for her opening race on the track.
 
CSIT Games- Spain
Congratulations to Jamie Pender and Cian Kelly who have been selected to represent Leinster at the CSIT Games in Tortosa, Spain from 2nd- 7th July. This opportunity offers both athletes a great experience of international competition and continues their development towards senior ranks.



 
46th Annual Student Games
The event produced plenty of action! Happy heads all round and great enjoyment. The night also saw the cup pass to new holders as Ardough N.S (Bilboá), Mayo, Newtown and Ballinabranna took the win with a total of 222 points. In 2nd place we had team E comprising of Ballyadams, Barrowhouse, Wolfhill, The Swan, Timahoe and Knock who gathered 133 points. Completing the rostrum were Killeshin in 3rd position with a final total of 127 points. Well done to all students who competed and a special word of thanks to parents and teachers who worked hard to get them out. A massive thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the event a success.

South Leinster Track and Field
A number of St Abbans athletes took part in Day 1 of the South Leinster Track and Field, held in Waterford last week. Niamh Graham was 3rd in the Junior Discus and 4th in the Shot Putt, Katie Baldwin was 7th in Minor Long Jump, Audrey Bryne battled hard for 3rd position in the Junior Girls 1100, Maya Brennan was 1st in Minor High Jump and 7th in the Long Jump, Jack Fenlon ran a great race to finish 3rd in the Minor 1500 while Lee Murray finished strongly in 8th. There were some great displays of determination on the day with everyone battling for a place in The Leinster Schools.
South Leinster Schools Day 2
Wednesday 9th May, Waterford RSC

St Abban’s AC had a strong showing on day, with an athlete in almost all athlete disciplines from hurdles to hammer to sprints to shot. Our athletes competed excellently and showed great talent, drive and skill. Every one of them had a smile on their face and it was great to see the comradery between our athletes.

Leinster Schools Day 1
16th May @ Santry, Dublin

The competition at Leinster School was as always very strong. St Abban’sstheles as always battles hard and gave as good as they got. Getting to Leinsters is in itself a hugh achievement. Well done to all out athletes who competed on the day

 Eadaoin Cody 2nd on Wednesday in intermediate hammer 44.81 pb ??

 Shane buggy 2nd u16 shot ??it’s great to see Shane thriving in the throws and he has great potential going forward

 Maya Brennan won the Minor Girls HJ with 1.58m ??Record currently is 1.59m, Maya attempted 1.60m and knocked the bar with close effort on 3rd attempt. Well done, super jumping

 Jack Fenlon ran the 1500m running 4:33. This is incredible running. Jack applied himself throughout the race, never putting a foot wrong finishing 7th. ???

 Niamh Graham continued to show good form in throws with 7th place finish in the junior shot and a 6th in the discus. Niamh is definitely one to watch for the future 

 Audrey Byrne 12th in minor 1100m. Audrey is a great athlete with a even better attitude.

Leinster Schools Day 2
18th May @ Santry, Dublin

Santry was the stage once more for an exciting day of schools action. St Abban’s had great success on the day, with several athletes breaking new ground and getting PB’s.

Massive congratulations to Ruby who was 1st with a jump of 5.81m in the senior Long Jump which was a new championship record

To all our athletes we hope you enjoyed the experience and learnt lots on the day. Leinster Schools is highly competitive and a great building block in a young athletes journey

National Road Relays

We had a men’s team compete in the National Road Relays, the blue ribbon team event on the road and offers the stiffest competition. It was wonderful to see the green, white and gold of Abban's back where it belongs against the best distance runners in Ireland. The team was
Cian Kely 2 mile leg, Naoise Kettle 1 mile leg, Stephen Lawlor 3 mile leg and Will Kelly 2 mile leg.
Quiz Fundraiser for Womens team travelling to Finland

We had a night fun and questions at Sturday night’s fundraiser. Well done to all who supported this event and to the volunteers who organised. A big thank you to event sponsor Quinn Motors Kilkenny. We were delighted to have John Quinn, on the night, who presented the prizes.
1st Place: Emma Daly, Conor Daly, Michael Daly and Anita Brennan.
2nd Place: Rachel Mulholland and Brendan Kehoe, Mark Dowling and Nicole Kehoe Dowling.
3rd Place: James Nolan, Eve Ní Dhomhnalláin, thomas Hayes and Stephen Lawlor.
Laois County Track and Field Championships

Well done to all our athletes who took park in the Laois County Track and Field held at St Abban's A.C. It is great to see so many young athletes who competed against the best in Laois.
 
24th Annual Open Sports
Bank Holiday Monday saw the 24th running of the Open Sports, which was kindly sponsored by Councillor Ben Brennan. All together 32 different clubs from around the country competed across the day with some great battles and performances throughout. The throwing events once again generated great interest with a European Youth Olympic Standard achieved by Ciara Sheehy from Limerick. Our near neighbours St Laurence O Toole’s retained the Monevea Shield, followed by ACE, AC and Barrow Valley in 3rd position. Many thanks to all clubs and parents who helped to make the day such a fantastic event.

The Leinster Novice and Masters Road Championships took place on the familiar loop of Gowran today. We had a number of Masters athletes competing in various categories.

F45 Colette English 2nd, Margo Dowling 4th, Sharon Buggy 9th and Mairead Moore 10th. The team finished in 8th overall!

F50 Ann Nichol Waugh 7th.

F55 Colette Brennan 5th

F60 Maire Fleming finished in 2nd position.

 In the Masters men Colm Burke won the M40 category, with Dermo Ayers in 8th and Colin Coyne in 10th position. The team claimed 5th club. 
Colm also helped the county team to a gold medal! 
M45 Liam Byrne finished in 4th position.

In the M60 Francis Fleming was first past the post while Paddy Harding also won the M70 category.

All in all a very successful day out for the Club. Well done to all athletes continuing to wear the St Abbans colours proudly!

Fit4Life continues every Monday and Wednesday at 7.30pm as we continue to prepare for our own Fit4Life league starting on Wednesday May the  8th in Luggacurren.

Well done to our Masters and Juniors that headed to Portarlington on Sunday the 12th of May. Individual medals were won by Colette Brennan, Liam Byrne, Colm Burke and TJ Burke, Dinny Whelan Paddy Harding and Francis Fleming.
Our gold winning O45 team in Portarlington at the Laois Masters  - Dinny Whelan, Francis Fleming, Liam Byrne and Paddy Harding. The fab four have the combined age of 250 years young, 61.7 being their average age. Some achievement, well done lads.

County Intermediate Road

Well done to the St Abban’s Women’s team who took 2nd team in the Laois Intermediate Road Race and to Caitriona won individual bronze. Keep up the good work ladies. Well done Caitríona, Joyce Byrne, Avril Murphy, Noeleen Condron, Pauline Doyle and Sharon Buggy.

Finland Update
This is our last Finland update. This Thursday morning  an entourage of 36 athletes, coaches and supporters will travel to the ECCC Track & Field in Tampere Finland. On Saturday the 25th of May, our Ladies’s team will take on the might of Europe to compete for European club glory.
